Mission Statement To research the origin, history and present status of British feral goat herds, with the overall aim of identifying the remaining British Primitive Goats and preserving a viable gene bank of these for the future. Aims of The British Feral Goat Research Group

To research the origin, history and present status of British feral goat herds.

To classify extant British feral goat populations according to three categories: (i) of known British Primitive origin (ii) of British Primitive origin with varying degrees of introgression. (iii) of known modern origin.

To map the genetic diversity of extant British Primitive Goat populations and devise a conservation plan that maintains the diversity of the gene pool.

To research theories regarding the origin of feral goats and in particular the hypothesis that any type of goat, once it goes feral, reverts to a so-called wild type.

To work towards recognition of British Primitive Goats as a breed type.

To actively engage with landowners/managers to establish management plans to safeguard the gene pool and welfare of British Primitive Goats.

To make all research material as widely available as is possible.

To promote through education the historical importance and conservation value of the British Primitive Goat.
